               1960 500cc Grand Prix reports

                                                             By Leslie Archer

Les Archer archive                                                Les Archer and Sten Lundin await the start of a GP in 1960.

Recently I was fortunate enough to meet and become friends with 1956 500cc European (World) Champion Leslie Archer. Les was a factory Norton rider from England and hailed from a family that had a long history in motorcycling that goes all the way back to the beginning in the early 1900's. His family was also involved in the very early stages of motocross in the 1920's when it was called scrambling. During the 1960 grand-prix season Les informed the world what was going on at the GP's by recording the events right after they took place on a small reel to reel recorder and then sent them to Motor Cycling magazine in England where they were then put into print in the weekly publication. The accounts of the races are very unique because they were written by the former champion who was actually competing in those events and they were recorded immediately afterwards. Les was kind enough to send copies of the original prints and allow all the viewers of MXworksbike.com to learn about this fantastic era in motocross history. An interesting note: Sten Lundin's Monark that he used for this entire season is the very bike that became the Lito the next year that is in this collection.
