                                           "Rocket" Rex Staten

When I think of Southern California motocross in the seventies, one of the first names that comes to mind is Rex Staten. He was a true power house in the CMC races.  The first time I saw Rex though was at Mid-Ohio at a Inter-am race in 1974. He was riding one of those super fast red RC Honda works bikes.  Rex got the holeshot and was "flat trackin" all the turns and squeezing every last pony out of that works Honda, it was unbelievable.  Then the next time I saw Rex was at the 1975 USGP in Carlsbad California on a 240lb. CZ.  Rex got the holeshot there too and almost won against the world's best. In the CMC races at that time, if Rex didn't break he usually won.  He had various factory rides and earned every one of them. In 1980, riding a factory Yamaha, Rex won the Daytona Supercross.  The following photographs were donated by one of Rex's long time friends Eric Johnson.  Eric also has a web site dedicated to Rex's hall of fame motocross career.  Make sure you check it out.  It is listed on the links page.
